It's a fair question. ChatGPT is powerful, widely available, and in some cases free. So why would you use something else? This post answers that question honestly, without dismissing general-purpose AI as a legitimate option.

If you upload a spec section to ChatGPT and ask "what are the submittal requirements in this section," you'll get a reasonable answer. If you ask "what ASTM standards are referenced," you'll get a list. These are legitimate uses of a general-purpose AI tool that some contractors have incorporated into their workflows.

So the question isn't whether ChatGPT can help with spec review. It can. The question is whether it delivers the same results as SpecSwift in the same amount of time with the same level of reliability.

Processing individual spec sections. For a contractor who only needs to review one or two spec sections and has time to work through the context window limitation, ChatGPT can work reasonably well with a well-crafted prompt.


The Bottom Line Comparison

For occasional, targeted spec review tasks (interpreting specific language, researching a standard, drafting an RFI) ChatGPT is a legitimate and often free tool that delivers value.
